Song of the Day: The Babies - Get Lost

Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. Today’s selection comes from the excellent Brooklyn band The Babies. "Get Lost" comes off their sophomore LP, Our House On The Hill, out now on Woodsist.

The Babies are the musical spawn of two already thriving underground Brooklyn bands: Vivian Girls and Woods. Cassie Ramone brings the gritty but gorgeous lo-fi indie rock we adored on Vivian Girls' last record Share The Joy, and Kevin Morby brings the strong songwriting and Americana tendencies of his own catalogue. Together, joined by Bossy drummer Justin Sullivan and bassist Brian Schleyer, they make a new group who are in every way worthy of your consideration. They introduced themselves in 2011 with their wonderfully raw self-titled LP and went just about as lo-fi as you can really go with their melancholy 2012 EP Cry Along With The Babies. But on Our House On The Hill, Ramone and Morby throw a bit more polish on the track to bring out some seriously gorgeous melodies.

Our House On The Hill single "Get Lost" should give you just enough of a glimpse to want more of The Babies. It's a big, loud, chorusey Americana jam tune, with Morby's style throughout. Lyrically, "Get Lost" is pure reckless abandon. At the brink of social suffocation, Morby cries to the one he loves to hurry up and run away with him. But as we all know, even if we see the problem, sometimes it takes a while for us to do anything about it. The track echoes this anticipation perfectly with a simple but driving structure that consistently pushes towards the next piece. Finally, almost as a wordless addendum to Morby's cries, an awesome extended guitar solo matches each emotion blow for blow until the end. Altogether, "Get Lost" won't spoil the absolute best tracks on Our House On The Hill for you, but it will get your mouth watering.
