Wye Oak - Fear of Heights

Song of the Day
Hosted by Cheryl Waters
Today's Song of the Day, as chosen by Cheryl Waters, host of The Midday Show on KEXP, is “Fear of Heights” by Wye Oak, a 2020 single on Merge Records.
written by Janice Headley

Since forming back in mid-2006, Wye Oak have melded together the talents of guitarist/vocalist Jenn Wasner and percussionist/keyboardist Andy Stack, who each thrive with their respective solo projects Flock of Dimes and Joyero on the side. With the duo now living in the same city for the first time since 2012 (their adopted and label home of Durham, NC), they found time to return to the studio last summer, resulting in several stand-alone singles, including today's Song of the Day.

Via a press release, the band provide some insight into the new track: "This song’s central metaphor likens the deepening of a relationship to the feeling of ascending to the top of a very tall place. There’s something to be seen (or learned, or experienced) once you arrive, but for some there is also a fear that increases with every step upwards. You say it’s worth it for the view, but it’s impossible to know if that’s true until you get there to see it with your own eyes."

While we wait for a follow-up to their 2018 album The Louder I Call, The Faster It Runs, Wye Oak kick off their ambitious “JOIN” tour today in Asheville, NC. The dates will be performed with a newly-expanded live line-up and the set list will be comprised not only of Wye Oak faves, but tracks from both Joyero and Flock of Dimes, as well. Check out the complete tour dates below; heads up that the March 20th Seattle date at The Crocodile is already sold out.
