La Bruja De Texcoco is the musical project of Octavio Mendoza Anario, who has also performed under the moniker “O.” The origin story of this project is unique: Anario had been hired to play violin with a group of traditional musicians who play guitars made from armadillo shells. In the middle of the event, a woman started convulsing and a curandero (a traditional healer) asked Anario to play her violin as a means of healing this woman. Panicked, she strummed “El Pescador” — one of the hymns she’d learned in Catholic masses as a kid — and her band chimed in. The woman got better, and the healer took Anario into the woods and instructed her to address the demon that she had helped expel. She called herself La Bruja de Texcoco and began identifying as a woman (prior to that night, she had been a cisgendered man). According to Bandcamp’s profile of her, “she is still understanding how her powerful trans femininity can be tied to both the music she makes as La Bruja, and the impact it has on her own personal life.”

La Bruja de Texcoco released her debut album, De Brujas Peteneras y Chachalacas, this March. She blends traditional Mexican music with supernatural lyrics, and injects both with a modern flair using violin, harp, accordion, and other instruments. The five tracks are broken up by interludes of nature sounds.
