British duo Maribou State released their sophomore album Kingdoms In Colour, via Ninja Tune’s Counter Records imprint early last month. The record follows 2015’s breakthrough debut album Portraits and sees the band expanding their previous atmospheric electronic music into a rich and dynamic “sonic collage” of a record that draws on ideas that were written while touring in places like India, and on field recordings from Asia, Australia, Morocco, America and beyond. Our Song of the Day, “Kingdom,” is a lavishly layered funk jam that’s buoyed by tribal rhythms inspired by their journeys.
“The idea with Maribou State was always to draw on influences from different parts of the world,” explains Liam Ivory. "By traveling, sampling, recording, we wanted to create this all encompassing thing. Which is what this second record has ended up being for us.”
In 2019, the band’s journeys will take them to Seattle to play Neumos on February 22. Watch the official video for the Holly Walker-featuring album highlight "Nervous Tics" below.
