On their sophomore full-length Four of Arrows, Great Grandpa overcome their physical distance to create something still sonically solid. Since the release of their 2017 debut Plastic Cough, band members Carrie and Pat Goodwin relocated to Wisconsin, leaving Dylan Hanwright, Alex Menne, and Cam LaFlam back here in Seattle.
"For me, it was a really good thing to move away from Seattle for a while," Carrie told Upset Magazine. "I just needed to do something that was on my own. We'd been spending so much time together as a band, and we'd been touring so much. Our lives were chaotic all the time, and it was nice to get a little bit of a routine back in my life and do something outside of music that made music feel exciting again."
For today's Song of the Day, Pat told Nylon Magazine he had two distinct goals he was trying to achieve:
The first being to write a song for Carrie that combined many of her favorite genres/artists — '90s pop-country, Tom Petty, Third Eye Blind, Taylor Swift, the Beatles, etc. — into something cohesive. The second being to capture this elusive spirit present in many of Petty's great songs, where the underlying melancholy emotion is gilded or masked by joyful melodies and arrangements then slowly revealed in the lyrics.
All five members will be back in Seattle on November 16th as the band plays Chop Suey with Ings and Tourist Activities. Check out the rest of their North American tour dates below:
