KEXP Youth Radio Program

KEXP is excited to present a free education program teaching youth the art of music curation and radio. Working with KEXP DJs, young music-lovers will gain knowledge and training in music curation, board operation, physical and digital asset management, mentorship, and basic broadcast DJing skills. Youth will also gain insight into non-commercial, public, community radio with classes taking place right here at the KEXP studio.

Students who complete the full training will join a cohort of rotating hosts for KEXP’s Youth Radio Program, 90.TEEN.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?

Youth ages 15-18 with a passion for music.

ALL PARTICIPANTS RECEIVE:

Fully funded six-week in-person class instruction
$150 stipend for in-person class instruction from September 12th, 2024 - October 17th, 2024
$30 for each show aired on KEXP
One-on-one mentorship from KEXP DJs
Total program duration - September 12th, 2024 - June 12th, 2025

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR:

Youth ages 15-18 in the Seattle-Tacoma metro area
Dependable
Open to learning new things and refining them
Access to Wi-Fi
Has a working computer (if not, KEXP will work to provide one)
Works well with others
Passionate about music, sharing music and discovering new music.
Shows enthusiasm and commitment for creative projects
Shows interest in curation
Able to commit 3-4 hours per week for in-class learning and homework between 9/12 and 10/17 , and three 30-minute one-on-one mentorship sessions, between October and May.
Able to commit to in-person, two hour recording sessions twice per month.

PROGRAM EXPECTATIONS:

Class start date: Thursday, September 7th
Class end date: Thursday, October 12th
Time: 4:30pm - 6:30 PM PST (weekly)
Recording sessions: October 19th - May 30th (approximately 2 per month)
Three mentorship sessions: Between October & May

Students who complete the full training will join a cohort of rotating hosts for KEXP’s youth hosted radio program 90.TEEN.

The first show will air on Saturday, November 2nd at 6:00 AM PST on KEXP.

*Program with cohort will end June 12th, 2025 with shows airing through October 2025.

*Please note there is no guarantee of being hired at KEXP

Applicants must live in or near the Seattle-Tacoma metro area and be able to travel to KEXP studios.
