Former Olympia-local, now Brooklyn-based, and forever adored songwriter Mirah is preparing to release her sixth solo record, Understanding, on Sept. 7 via Absolute Magnitude. Before that, however, she has one final offering to share from the album with the single “Ordinary Day.”

Given Mirah’s diverse taste and the genres she’s traversed throughout her prolific career, “Ordinary Day” swerves between several different sonic territories. At some moments it feels like a lounge-ballad, at other points it’s a furious, blown out, experimental romp. What is consistent though is Mirah’s enchanting vocals, swirling around the flurry of sounds and holding it together with her powerful lyricism.

“It’s always strange to write love songs, to fall in love, when the world feels like it’s falling into a dark hole,” Mirah told Brooklyn Vegan alongside the track release. “But we have to. It’s useful actually. Love lifts the world up. It makes it so you can wake up crying, but then look over at the one you love and know that you can face the world, together and separately, and bring beauty and bring peace, not just to each other, but to everyone you meet and every place you go. Love is a strong power.”
