Mark Kozelek’s career has thrown fans through a few loops in recent years. Since he began taking a stream of consciousness songwriting approach on the remarkable 2014 Sun Kil Moon LP Benji, Kozelek has continued to pack his songs with countless pop culture and boxing references with anecdotes about his life (and not to mention that pretty problematic War On Drugs diss-track). Nevertheless, Kozelek seems to find himself inspired – releasing a new record every year under the Sun Kil Moon moniker as well as several under his own name. Now he’s back with another Sun Kil Moon record to add to the pantheon with This Is My Dinner, out Nov. 1 on Caldo Verde Records.

He previously shared a cover of The Partridge Family’s “Come On Get Happy” (yeah, really) and today he shares a new original track from the LP called “Linda Blair.” Given Blair’s infamous role as possessed child in The Exorcist, Kozelek takes the opportunity to offer up a pretty, uh, faithful impersonation of her snarling and growling from the film. He gives a phlegmy gargle over a looping, math-rock guitar that wouldn’t feel out of place on a Minus The Bear album. In typical Kozelek fashion, he does a fair share of name-checking as well. He talks about how much he hates The Eagles, reiterates his love for AC/DC, and mentions some of his favorite all-time records like Neil Young’s Harvest. There’s also a long pondering about the career of Polish boxer Andrew Golota, particularly his fight against Mike Tyson.

“Linda Blair” is streaming now on the Sun Kil Moon website.

Album Review: Sun Kil Moon - Benji

"It's a complicated place, this planet we're on." That's how Mark Kozelek closes "Dogs", the most confrontational and stomach-churning cut on new Sun Kil Moon record, Benji. It's a great thesis for the rest of the record, really - Kozelek has witnessed some pretty insane shit, and much of it appear…
