Ellis May is the alias of Copenhagen-based musician, composer, producer and sound designer Sophia Maj. Her time spent studying at The Royal Danish Academy of Music and working on a number of film and television scores has led Maj to create very technically precise work under the Ellis May moniker. Our Song of the Day, “The Distance,” is a propulsive electronic brooder, released last month. The song was inspired in part by the real-life tragedy of her home burning down when she was a child, just a few days before Christmas. “I can move on,” Maj cries in falsetto, channeling the feelings of loss and the optimism of a new day moving forward.

The debut Ellis May EP is expected to be forthcoming. Watch the official video for last year’s single “River of Doubt,” directed by Catherine Pattinama Coleman, below.
