Sarah Beth Tomberlin makes hushed, intimate, and deeply-affecting music under the name Tomberlin. Her debut album, At Weddings, initially quietly appeared on Bandcamp late last year but received a proper release on Saddle Creek last month. The album was inspired heavily by the Jacksonville, Florida-born artist’s deeply religious upbringing. Our Song of the Day, “Any Other Way,” points to the guilt that comes with religion in the lyrics “Feeling bad for saying/Oh my God/Gave me a sudden feeling/That I didn't have a place.” The song is simple in instrumentation, only an acoustic guitar and keyboard make an appearance around her whispered vocals. The result is an achingly intimate and intensely moving song. Tomberlin will play the Columbia City Theater on Thursday, December 6 with Andy Shauf.
