The White Stripes: Elephant
Buy! - (V2)
Far from letting their new-found fame go to their heads, this Detroit duo continues to carry out their uncompromising musical mission with glorious results. The ingredients and influences are still there, from raw gutbucket blues and hints of country to '60s British rock (particularly the Kinks and Led Zep). At times, the sound is monstrously loud and heavy, at others it's marked by a breathtaking delicacy. Whether soft or loud, all of the songs here strike emotional paydirt, with Jack White taking his anxieties about sex, romance and fame and turning them into high drama and great rock 'n' roll. 5/15/2003 - Don Yates
