Yeah Yeah Yeahs: Fever to Tell
Buy! - (Interscope)
This much-hyped New York band fully delivers on the promise of their debut EP while avoiding the self-indulgence of EP #2 with this astounding debut album of electric art-punk, with none of the cerebral distance that tag might imply. The music starts out all live wires and animal heat, a stark attack of shifting guitar and drum patterns that coalesce into primal rock riffage. And charismatic frontwoman Karen O. is all nervous energy, singing about sex and love with an emotional directness that's totally fearless while panting, moaning, shrieking and yowling like PJ Harvey possessed by Satan. And then, two-thirds of the way through the album, they broaden their sound by toning it down with some moody, reflective songs that are just as powerful. A truly great album from a great band. 5/15/2003 - Don Yates
