- (Interscope)
This Philly soul singer used to sing backup for D'Angelo, and his debut album shares similarities with D'Angelo's gritty, hip hop-flavored sound. Bilal also occasionally swoops up with a sweetly aching falsetto like his former boss, though he's more likely to sing in his natural register, exhibiting a sturdy, flexible vocal style with an impressive command ranging from old-school testifying to intensely melismatic moans. 8/15/2001
