This veteran British singer-songwriter’s seventh album signals a dramatic musical shift away from the lush orchestration of his previous solo releases in favor of a brooding, muscular psych-rock sound with loud, rumbling guitars, bass and drums accompanying Hawley’s deep croon on dark, occasionally politically charged songs lamenting a world falling apart. At times, the album sounds more like a Mark Lanegan record than one by Hawley, but it’s a powerful one nonetheless. 8/24/2012
