Dr. John: Locked Down
Buy! - (Nonesuch)
The latest album from the veteran New Orleans keyboardist (aka Mac Rebennack) is one of his strongest albums in a long, long time, hearkening back to the swampy and spooky New Orleans voodoo funk of his classic late ‘60s-early ‘70s albums like Gris-Gris and Gumbo. Produced by The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach and featuring stellar accompaniment from Auerbach along with members of Antibalas, Menahan Street Band/El Michels Affair, the Poets of Rhythm, and the Soledad Brothers, Locked Down sports a raw, tough, colorful, densely produced and groove-oriented voodoo funk-rock sound injected with Afro-beat, Ethiopian funk, psych-rock, blues, soul and gospel. While Dr. John is better-known for his piano-playing skills, he’s primarily featured here playing Farfisa (along with Hammond B-3) organ, giving a bit more exotic, underground edge to an impressively fresh-sounding batch of songs ranging from politically charged material to more personal and reflective fare. 4/6/2012 - Don Yates
