Tom Waits: Bad As Me
Buy! - (Anti-)
The legendary singer-songwriter’s first regular studio album since 2004’s Real Gone finds him in peak form on one of his most visceral and vibrant recordings, a masterful set of tautly constructed, filler-free songs ranging from junkyard blues stomps, jazzy torch songs and bleary-eyed saloon ballads to mariachi country, demonic martial chanting and unhinged rockabilly. Like his other latter-day releases, Bad As Me was co-produced by his wife and songwriting partner Kathleen Brennan, and the album’s stellar accompaniment also includes guitarist Marc Ribot, Keith Richards, Los Lobos’ David Hidalgo, harmonica master Charlie Musselwhite, keyboardist Augie Meyers, Flea, Les Claypool and Preservation Jazz Hall Band members Clint Maedgen and Ben Jaffe. Waits’ gravelly vocals sound as expressive as ever, whether singing songs of old age, unrequited love and hitting the road or yowling about the horrors of war and the ravages of our current economic misery. 10/25/2011 - Don Yates
