Case Studies is the new project from Seattle’s Jesse Lortz, formerly the male half of The Dutchess & The Duke. His debut album under that name is a consistently strong set of dark acoustic-oriented folk-pop that was mostly recorded at a secluded cabin in Sequim with the help of a few friends including Greg Ashley, who also produced. While Case Studies’ campfire sound is similar to that of The Dutchess & The Duke, it leans less on mid-60s Stones and more on dark folk troubadours like Lee Hazlewood, Townes Van Zandt and Leonard Cohen, with an intimate, haunting blend of strummed acoustic and electric guitars, homespun female harmonies, tambourine, shakers, occasional piano and Lortz’s morose croon. 8/19/2011
