PJ Harvey: Let England Shake
Buy! - (Vagrant)
PJ Harvey’s 8th regular studio album is somewhat similar to the ethereal folk-pop of her last album (2007’s White Chalk), but with a comparatively lighter touch, fuller arrangements and a wider range of instrumentation. While White Chalk was a somber, piano-based album, this one features prominent use of autoharp, zither and other ancient instruments, giving it a distinct old-time folk feel at times (albeit one that includes a few music samples among other modern touches). As on White Chalk, she sings primarily in her upper register here with a mournful, fragile tone that accents the sense of loss felt on dark, fatalistic songs exploring national identity while laying bare the brutality of war. 2/7/2011 - Don Yates
