The 2nd album from this band featuring Nick Cave and a few members of his regular group The Bad Seeds is even better than their explosive 2007 debut. While the sound is still visceral and noisy, it’s also more wide-ranging and nuanced, with the band sounding more cohesive and the songs more adventurous, expanding upon the debut’s primitive blues-punk racket with elements of German prog-rock, psychedelic guitar freakouts, raw swamp blues and more. Cave is at his peak as a singer and songwriter here, howling and crooning surreal lyrics filled with black horror, bawdy humor and pent-up sexual frustration. 9/14/2010
