- (Bad Boy/Wondaland)
This Atlanta-based artist follows up her 2007 EP The Chase with her debut full-length, a brilliant, wildly eclectic sci-fi concept album blending R&B, funk, hip hop, vintage soul, psych-rock, glam, prog, classical, punk, metal, indie-rock, folk, cabaret, swing, Broadway musicals, James Bond soundtracks and even more. You’ll find sophisticated orchestration, horns and a full choir, along with funky rhythms and acid-rock guitars accompanying Monae’s elastic vocals, which range from sweet, jazzy crooning to funky rapping to hard-rock screaming. You might hear echoes of her compatriots Outkast (that duo’s Big Boi is the album’s co-executive producer, and he also guests on album standout “Tightrope”), along with Prince, Stevie Wonder, George Clinton and other wide-ranging visionaries, but she’s created her own vast musical universe. She’s 24 years old. This is her first album. Amazing. 5/18/2010
