The Hold Steady: Heaven Is Whenever
Buy! - (Vagrant)
The Hold Steady’s 5th album turns out to be the band’s most musically expansive record, and also their most comparatively subtle and nuanced, with less emphasis on meaty fist-pumping anthems and more on melody, texture and dynamics. With keyboardist Franz Nicolay no longer in the band, Tad Kubler’s guitar is even more dominant, but he’s also playing with a new level of sophistication. Still, this is a band that loves, and more important, believes in rock ‘n’ roll, and while Heaven Is Whenever is a more subtle expression of their faith in the power of rock, love and community, that faith still comes through loud and clear on another sterling batch of songs. 4/23/2010 - Don Yates
