Erykah Badu: New Amerykah Part 2: Return of the Ankh
Buy! - (Universal Motown)
The sequel to this eccentric soul singer’s adventurous 2008 album New Amerykah Part One (4th World War) is in some ways that album’s opposite. Instead of warped, chilly space-funk and dark, politically charged songs, Part 2 is centered around warmer, lighter grooves and songs about love. This being Erykah Badu, her love songs aren’t the conventional kind – they’re more free-spirited, with lyrics reflecting Badu’s strong sense of self. Her nasally, jazz-tinged crooning remains one of modern soul’s most distinctive pleasures, accompanied here by trippy textures and stoned, off-center rhythms. 4/9/2010 - Don Yates
