Johnny Cash: American VI: Ain't No Grave
Buy! - (American)
The final installment in the country legend’s American Recordings series was recorded in the last year or so of his life. As with other volumes in the series, the song selection’s fairly eclectic, though this one leans harder on traditional country, folk and gospel as Cash takes one last look back on his life. The gospel tune “I Corinthians 15:55” is the sole Cash original and it’s a good one, but all of the songs here are natural fits for one of country music’s singular voices. The accompaniment’s mostly spare, and Cash’s vocals (surprisingly stronger than on American V) are powerfully affecting. American VI is a fitting, deeply poignant last act from one of the true greats of American music. 2/11/2010 - Don Yates
