Mos Def: The Ecstatic
Buy! - (Downtown)
Since his impressive 1999 solo debut Black On Both Sides, this Brooklyn rapper has put out a couple of unfocused, seemingly tossed-off albums marred by dubious stylistic experiments, while spending more time acting in mostly mediocre films than developing his considerable musical skills. Well, Mos Def is back, and The Ecstatic is easily his best album in a decade, combining adventurous production (with many songs using evocative Middle Eastern samples) and bad-ass beats with on-fire rapping and sharp, politically conscious rhymes. 6/3/2009 - Don Yates
