Bob Dylan: Together Through Life
Buy! - (Columbia)
Continuing his latter-day creative renaissance, Dylan offers up his most emotionally direct work in quite awhile, finding focus – and solace – in love while living in a fucked-up world. The sound is equally direct, an earthy blend of tough roadhouse blues inspired by ‘50s-era Chess Records (particularly Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf) and Southwestern border country (the accordion of Los Lobos’ David Hidalgo is as prominent as Mike Campbell’s rumbling electric guitar). Dylan uses his battered croak like the wily old bluesman he is on these deceptively simple songs, intensifying their sly blend of comedy and tragedy, sincerity and sarcasm, plain-speak and profundity. 4/23/2009 - Don Yates
