Cymbals Eat Guitars: Why There Are Mountains
Buy! - (self-released)
This young New York band debuts with a remarkable album of adventurous, dynamic indie-rock steeped in classic indie bands like early Modest Mouse, Built to Spill, Pavement and Yo La Tengo. The band’s epic, expansive songs are imaginatively arranged, often unexpectedly shifting gears and heading off into an entirely different direction. They have a gift for distinctive melodies and catchy song hooks, but they also aren’t afraid to bring the noise. With nearly every song on it being something special, Why There Are Mountains isn’t just one of 2009’s best debuts, it’s one of the year’s most impressive rock albums, period. 4/2/2009 - Don Yates
