Yeah Yeah Yeahs: It's Blitz!
Buy! - (Interscope)
This New York band offers up a very different sound on their 3rd album, almost completely doing away with the kind of raucous garage-punk that powered their debut album (and more recently the Is Is EP) in favor of richly textured, atmospheric dance-pop. Nick Zinner’s guitar is still present on most tracks, but synthesizer is the dominant instrument, and while the rhythms are suited for the dance floor, it’s a pretty chilled album overall, with ballads taking up about half of the record and a mood of wistful, late-night melancholy permeating the proceedings. Karen O. continues to grow as a vocalist, downplaying the twitchy yelping of past records for a more natural style of singing that works beautifully with these often-gorgeous songs. 3/11/2009 - Don Yates
