Deerhunter: Microcastle
Buy! - (Kranky)
The Atlanta band takes a big step forward on their 3rd album, improving upon last year’s promising Cryptograms by balancing the band’s noisy, shoegazerish ambience with stronger, pop-oriented songcraft. Surprising echoes of ‘50s doo wop and ‘60s girl groups show up alongside more obvious Deerhunter influences like the Velvet Underground, the Jesus & Mary Chain and German prog-rock in the band’s still-adventurous but more brightly melodic new songs. 9/23/2008 - Don Yates
