- (Vagrant)
The 4th album from the Brooklyn-via-Minneapolis band brings some new instrumentation at times (harpsichord, strings, banjo) to their Springsteen/Thin Lizzy bar-band sound while still sounding very much like a Hold Steady record. If anything, they’re more musically potent than ever, thanks to the band’s increasing skills and Craig Finn’s growing confidence in singing. Despite the album’s title, it’s also a bit lyrically darker, more explicitly detailing the dangers of making a religion out of the rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle, even while continuing to find inspiration in the music as a way to build community and escape a dead-end life. 6/24/2008
