Alejandro Escovedo: Real Animal
Buy! - (Back Porch/Manhattan)
The renowned Austin singer-songwriter takes stock of his life and career in music on his 9th album, which is not only the most direct and hardest-rocking of his solo career, but also one of his best. References to his early punk and rock bands (the Nuns, Rank & File and the True Believers) are scattered throughout the record, as are people and places that impacted him along the way. The album was co-written with fellow rock veteran Chuck Prophet (who also contributes guitar and backing vocals), and together they’ve done a wonderful job of encapsulating the many phases of Escovedo’s storied career, from snarling garage-punk to elegiac chamber-folk. 5/26/2008 - Don Yates
