Portishead: Third
Buy! - (Mercury)
The British trio’s 1st album in 11 years is a stunner. While their 1st two studio albums were dark, Third is a black pit of hopelessness and despair. This will not be a soundtrack for dinner parties or boutique store shopping. Third shares some similarities with their earlier trip-hop albums, but it’s more grimy, abrasive and daring, transmuting torchy folk songs with dislocated electronics, motorik prog-rock rhythms and claustrophobic sound effects. The album’s bleak, doom-laden songs are as cinematic as ever, but if this is a soundtrack, it’s the soundtrack to the end of the world. Deeply unsettling, at times even terrifying, Third is an intensely powerful listening experience that lasts long after the album ends. 4/24/2008 - Don Yates
