The Last Shadow Puppets: The Age of the Understatement
Buy! - (Domino)
The debut album from this side project led by Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner and the Rascals’ Miles Kane is an often-stunning set of dramatic orchestral pop rooted in the work of ‘60s composers like Scott Walker, John Barry and Ennio Morricone, featuring galloping rhythms and flavored with mariachi, flamenco, spaghetti western, surf and other styles. The duo is aided by producer/drummer Owen Ford (who’s also one-half of Simian Mobile Disco) and the 22-piece London Metropolitan Orchestra with arrangements by occasional Arcade Fire collaborator Owen Pallett. And while Turner’s proved himself to be a gifted lyricist with his previous evocative tales of working-class street life and rock ‘n’ roll angst, he shows a whole different side to his songwriting here, with cinematic imagery that’s as grandly imaginative as it is emotionally complex. 4/22/2008 - Don Yates
