Magnetic Fields: Distortion
Buy! - (Nonesuch)
Stephin Merritt pays tribute to the distortion-laced pop sound of the Jesus & Mary Chain’s seminal debut Psychocandy on his latest Magnetic Fields album. But while the layers of gauzy fuzz and blistering feedback on Psychocandy turned out to be more important than the songs buried underneath, that’s not the case with Distortion, which features stronger, more distinctive melodies and lyrics from one of the finest songwriters around. Shirley Simms (who was a guest vocalist on Merritt’s magnum opus 69 Love Songs) is featured even more here, though Merritt also contributes a number of typically dour vocals. 1/11/2008 - Don Yates
