Wu-Tang Clan: 8 Diagrams
Buy! - (SRC/Universal Motown)
The legendary Staten Island hip hop crew is back with their 1st album since 2001 (and the death of Ol’ Dirty Bastard). 8 Diagrams is already their most controversial record, with both Ghostface Killah and Raekwon publicly complaining about the RZA’s production. His scoring of films for the likes of Quentin Tarantino and Jim Jarmusch has given his music an even more cinematic and avant-garde bent, and despite the gripes, this is one of his crowning achievements. Mostly absent of big hooks and typical Wu-style gang choruses, 8 Diagrams is one of this year’s boldest and most adventurous hip hop albums, with trippy, almost psychedelic soundscapes that are as intricately crafted as they are borderline bizarre. And even with a couple of the group’s rappers unhappy with the end results, they all bring it here, especially Method Man, who’s absolutely on fire, just like he was onstage at Bumbershoot. Ultimately though, 8 Diagrams is the RZA’s show, and it’s one of this year's best. 12/13/2007 - Don Yates
