The Avett Brothers: Emotionalism
Buy! - (Ramseur)
Previous records from this North Carolina acoustic trio were ragged affairs of punkish bluegrass and folk that had lots of infectious energy but were marred by poor playing, singing and songwriting, which makes their latest album all the more surprising. While they still play things pretty loose, they’ve broadened their sound and, more important, worked a lot harder on making a good record and crafting memorable songs. They really don’t sound much like bluegrass anymore – more like acoustic folk-rock with some of the best moments recalling rootsy early Beatles. They’ll never be known as great singers or musicians, but that’s OK – they still have their passion, and now they have some great songs to express it. 5/18/2007 - Don Yates
