Amy Winehouse: Back to Black
Buy! - (Universal Republic)
While this British soul singer’s debut album leaned hard on smoky jazz ballads, her jaw-dropping follow-up (and 1st US release) is steeped in ‘60s soul and R&B, and flavored with some hip hop and reggae. Her bad-ass party-girl reputation has threatened to overshadow her music, and she feeds the fire with some remarkable, refreshingly frank songs like “Rehab,” “You Know I’m No Good” and “Addicted,” but she’s truly one special singer, with a brassy tone and confident phrasing that sound years beyond her young age. 2/9/2007 - Don Yates
