Jimmy Edgar: Color Strip
Buy! - (Warp)
This is a very nice debut full-length release for this Detroit native. It successfully blends IDM and techno with R&B and 80’s retro funk elements, which can be heard in the rhythms, retro synth and drum machine sounds, and Edgar’s own “singing”, which he does in a robotic vocoder-like processed voice. The production is more towards the sparse side of things, but I definitely wouldn’t call it “minimalism” because it’s much more melodic than most of the music that is often categorized by that term. Overall, the tracks have a stylish and sexy sound, to which this simplicity works well to accentuate. 3/24/2006 - Don Yates
