Calexico: Garden Ruin
Buy! - (Quarterstick)
This Arizona band led by Joey Burns and John Convertino dramatically revamps their sound to stunning effect on their 5th album. While their previous albums were heavily weighted with atmospheric instrumentals, vocals are a prominent part of every song here. The mariachi horns and other south-of-the-border sounds that spiced their previous releases are deemphasized (though not entirely absent) in favor of an expansive folk-rock sound that places the focus squarely on the songs. And what songs they are – beautifully crafted, with lyrics often touching upon political and social issues, but using telling, evocative imagery rather than settling for ham-fisted diatribes, many of them rank with the finest of the band’s career. 2/23/2006 - Don Yates
