Neko Case: Fox Confessor Brings the Flood
Buy! - (Anti-)
Neko Case emerged as a promising alt-country singer-songwriter with her 1997 solo debut album The Virginian. Since then, she’s released one great record after another, and her 4th studio album is another masterpiece that ranks with her very best work. Fox Confessor expands upon the noirish, atmospheric sound that enveloped her previous studio album (2002’s Blacklisted). It’s a haunting recording full of mystery, with Neko drawing upon old folk tales, gospel songs and stories from her grandmother to create evocative, poetic songs that strike deep. While many great musicians accompany her here (ranging from the Sadies and Calexico to Kelly Hogan and Visqueen’s Rachel Flotard), the spotlight is deservedly on Neko. Always a strong singer, her performances here are masterful in their subtlety and phrasing. With Fox Confessor, Neko Case deserves to be considered one of the most significant musical artists of our time. 1/27/2006 - Don Yates
