The White Stripes: Get Behind Me Satan
Buy! - (V2)
This Detroit duo’s fifth album is easily their most adventurous yet. While a few songs feature Jack White’s scuzzy electric blues-rock guitar, most of the album is centered around acoustic instruments like piano, acoustic guitar and even marimba. The songs feed off a variety of traditional roots and pop styles, but the White Stripes are more about reinvention here rather than settling for mere re-creation: Nothing on the album sounds like a simple echo of the past. The more expansive sonic palette gives them more musical colors to paint some of the most emotionally tormented songs Jack White’s ever written. 6/6/2005 - Don Yates
