Sleater-Kinney: The Woods
Buy! - (Sub Pop)
This Northwest trio’s seventh album (and first for Sub Pop) finds them dramatically reworking their sound with help from noted alt-rock producer Dave Fridmann. On their most adventurous outing to date, the band experiments with a variety of heavy guitar tones and textures, and even includes some lengthy guitar solos (a first for Sleater-Kinney). Corin Tucker lets loose with some of her most blood-curdling howls in quite some time, while the often-fiercely political lyrics show the band is in no danger of becoming complacent. Brutal and intense, The Woods is the sound of a band boldly reinventing itself while at the same time getting back to primal rock basics. 5/3/2005 - Don Yates
