- (MCA)
After a disastrous attempt to make a more crossover country-pop album (the
appropriately titled Something Worth Leaving Behind), this Texas singer
returns to her traditional country roots with a vengeance on her new
album.
Twin fiddles kick off the opening title song (perhaps the finest cheating song to grace a country album in ages) and from there on the album does a marvelous job of evoking and updating the music of Tammy Wynette, Sammi Smith, Dolly Parton and Connie Smith.
Most of the album's filled with some gorgeous countrypolitan ballads rooted in the country music of the early '70s, when fiddle-and-steel hard country was seasoned with some subtle orchestration. She nails that sound here, and sings with the passion and interpretive skill of one of the greats. She keeps this up, and she'll soon be joining them. 3/15/2005 - Don Slack
