- (Rounder)
James King has always been one of my favorite bluegrass singers - his raw,
rural voice is steeped in mountain soul. His latest is a concept album of
sorts, an eclectic collection of story songs ranging from hardcore
bluegrass and gospel to country classics and more modern alt-country songs
from Robert Earl Keen, David Olney and Fred Eaglesmith.
The subject matter's often grim - James generally prefers songs about the cold hard truth rather than more sunny fare - and it all adds up to one emotionally powerful listen. Some breathtaking, earthy harmonies complement one of bluegrass music's finest vocalists. 4/14/2005 - Don Slack
