The Raveonettes: Pretty in Black
Buy! - (Columbia)
On their second full-length album, this Danish group mostly ditches the Jesus & Mary Chain guitar fuzz and distortion that characterized their earlier releases while focusing more on the early rock ‘n’ roll influences that lurked underneath. This excellent outing of noirish, retro guitar-pop is squarely rooted in the music of Phil Spector and ‘60s girl groups, Buddy Holly, the Everly Brothers, Lee Hazlewood & Nancy Sinatra and surf, along with avant-rock sources like the Velvet Underground and Suicide, not to mention David Lynch soundtracks. Both the VU’s Moe Tucker and Suicide’s Martin Rev guest on the album (as does the Ronettes’ Ronnie Spector), but it’s the abundance of instantly memorable songs that makes this album a stand-out. 4/13/2005 - Don Yates
