The Ponys: Celebration Castle
Buy! - (In the Red)
This Chicago band follows up their excellent 2004 debut album with another wonderful outing of distinctive indie-rock that’s steeped in a variety of classic sources, including ‘60s garage-rock, surf and psychedelic rock, ‘70s New York punk and new wave, and ‘80s British post-punk, while not being slavishly devoted to any of them. While they were produced by Steve Albini this time, the sound isn’t much different from the warm, old-school rock grime of their Jim Diamond-produced debut, and like that first album, this one’s stuffed with catchy songs and a dizzying variety of classic-sounding guitar tones, riffs and effects. 4/5/2005 - Don Yates
