Okkervil River: Black Sheep Boy
Buy! - (Jagjaguwar)
This Austin-based band just keeps getting better, and they take another leap forward with their fourth full-length release, a concept album that’s loosely based around the song “Black Sheep Boy” from ‘60s folk singer Tim Hardin. The sound could be described as expansive folk-rock, using a variety of colorful instrumentation to flesh out lead singer and songwriter Tim Sheff’s highly literate tales of outcasts. Reminiscent but by no means simply echoing bands like the Arcade Fire and the Decemberists, Black Sheep Boy is arty and yet emotional, epic and yet almost painfully personal and intimate. It’s one truly special record. 4/1/2005 - Don Yates
