The former Sebadoh frontman returns with this excellent solo album of well-crafted, country-tinged songs combining a sparse, acoustic-oriented sound with heart-on-sleeve lyrics and some gorgeous melodies. While his previous solo outings (recorded under the name Sentridoh) were colored by lo-fi production hiss, the sound here is clean and intimate though free of excessive studio gloss. You’ll also find a little more humor than usual for Lou, reflected in the album title’s reference to a certain mopey indie sub-genre that Sebadoh is often credited for influencing, along with a plaintive acoustic version of Ratt’s ‘80s headbanger “Round and Round.” 1/10/2005
