Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds: Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus
Buy! - (Anti-)
Australia’s veteran musical poet of gloom and desire offers up his finest work in quite awhile on his latest release, which is actually two albums packaged together as a 2-CD set. Abattoir Blues is the darker and more raucous of the two albums (some of it’s noisy enough to evoke the Birthday Party), while The Lyre of Orpheus is more subdued and ballad-heavy. Both albums have a strong gospel bent, with Cave even using a gospel choir for the first time on many of the songs. Spiritual torment and human degradation are typically prominent in Cave’s literary lyrics, but the redemptive powers of love, beauty and nature can also be found here, giving a hopeful tinge to this often-dark outing. 10/19/2004 - Don Yates
