Tom Waits: Real Gone
Buy! - (Anti-)
The legendary singer-songwriter gets back to a more aggressively experimental musical approach on his latest album. While the rhythms underpinning some of the songs are as ancient as field hollers and chain-gang chants, the songs also incorporate reggae, cabaret, primitive rock and a heaping dose of blues. Waits and the musicians he uses here (including Marc Ribot on guitar) bring a variety of evocative textures to the proceedings, even if the album’s overall mood is often dark and forbidding. His vocals are often distorted, and on a few of the songs he uses his voice for some wild percussive effects. This fascinating album of junkyard avant-blues is bound to be considered one of the finest albums of the year. 9/24/2004 - Don Yates
