Bill Frisell: The Willies
Buy! - (Nonesuch)
The Seattle guitarist dips deep into roots music for inspiration on his latest album The Willies, which is also the name of one of his many side-projects. Accompanied by fellow Willies Danny Barnes (ex-Bad Livers) and bassist Keith Lowe, Frisell has come up with a sound here that could almost be described as "ambient bluegrass," using a blend of traditional and modern instrumentation for an evocative, dreamlike interpretation of American roots music that's quite dark and foreboding at times (it might even give you the willies!), along with being simply gorgeous. 6/15/2002 - Don Yates
